Trends of Research on Birth Order in Korea: Analysis of Korean Journal and Theses(1961-2015)

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the trends of research on birth order in Korea and provide the future directions in birth order studies. A total of 113 articles (1961-2015) were categorized by content and research method. The results were as follows. First, the number of studies started to increase in the 1990s and was almost doubled in the 2000s. Second, the most popular subjects were elementary school students followed by preschool students, adolescents, care givers, adults, and the elderly. Most of the subjects were preadult. Third, the biggest number of studies were about relations between siblings and peers followed by personality, development, parent factors, concept of self, adaptation, academic achievement and future career, state and trends, gender role, counseling intervention, and development of scales. Fourth, the most popular research method was survey research followed by experimental research, literature review, case
studies, and developmental research. Based on these findings, some implications and suggestions for future birth order research were discussed.
